Can foreigners drive in Japan? Yes — but the document you need depends entirely on your country, and getting it wrong means you legally cannot drive (or rent) when you arrive. This guide makes it simple: find your country, get the right paperwork, and you're set. We're VAN TRIP JAPAN, a family-run campervan rental in Fukuoka, and we help travellers sort this out every week.
⚠️ The most common mistake: assuming an International Driving Permit works for everyone. For six countries it does not — read on.
Quick answer: find your country
| Where your licence is from | What you need to drive in Japan |
|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 USA, 🇬🇧 UK, 🇦🇺 Australia, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇮🇱 Israel & most countries | International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention + your home licence |
| 🇫🇷 France, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇨🇭 Switzerland, 🇧🇪 Belgium, 🇲🇨 Monaco, 🇹🇼 Taiwan | Official Japanese translation of your licence (JAF/JDLTC) + your home licence — an IDP is NOT accepted |
Both options let you drive for up to one year from your date of entry into Japan.
Scenario A — International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention)
If your country signed the 1949 Geneva Convention (the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Israel and many more), you drive in Japan with an IDP carried alongside your original licence.
- Where to get it: in your home country before you fly — usually your automobile association, post office or licensing authority.
- Cost & time: typically low-cost and issued same-day to a couple of weeks.
- Important: IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention are not valid in Japan. Get the 1949 Geneva version specifically.
Scenario B — Official Japanese translation (France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco, Taiwan)
These six do not issue Geneva-Convention IDPs, so Japan requires an official Japanese translation of your national licence, carried with the original. This is straightforward:
- Easiest online option: our partner JDLTC (drive-japan-license.com) issues the accepted translation online before you travel — no need to queue at a JAF office after you land.
- Also possible: at a JAF branch in Japan, or (for 🇹🇼 Taiwan) through local channels at home for a modest fee — whichever is easiest for you.
- Validity: one year from entry; always carry it together with your original licence.

Essential road rules for first-time drivers in Japan
- 🚗 Drive on the LEFT, overtake on the right.
- 🍶 Zero-tolerance on alcohol — the legal limit is effectively 0.0%. Never drive after any drink.
- 🚸 Speed limits are low: ~30–40 km/h in towns, 50–60 on national roads, 80–120 on expressways.
- 💺 Seatbelts for everyone; children need appropriate seats.
- 🅿️ Use an ETC card for expressway tolls (included in every VAN TRIP JAPAN rental).

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive in Japan with just my home country's licence?
No. You always need your original licence plus one accepted document: an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention) for most countries, or an official Japanese translation of your licence for France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan.
Why isn't my International Driving Permit valid in Japan?
Japan only recognises IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan issue permits under the 1968 Vienna Convention, which Japan does not accept — so drivers from those countries need an official Japanese translation instead.
How do I get the official Japanese translation of my licence?
The easiest way is online before you travel, through our partner JDLTC (drive-japan-license.com). You can also obtain it at a JAF branch in Japan. It is valid for one year from your entry date and must be carried with your original licence.
How long can I drive in Japan as a tourist?
Both the IDP and the official translation allow you to drive for up to one year from your date of entry into Japan.
Do I need a special licence to rent and drive a campervan?
No. Our campervans are regular-sized vehicles, so a standard car licence (plus your IDP or Japanese translation) is enough. They are compact and easy to drive on Japanese roads.
Is driving in Japan hard for first-timers?
Japan drives on the left, but roads are well-signed, drivers are courteous, and speed limits are low. A compact van like the Toyota Probox makes it especially easy, and every rental includes English navigation and 24/7 support.
