Renting a campervan in Japan is an incredible way to explore, but there are some common pitfalls that catch first-timers off guard. Here are the 10 most common mistakes — and how to avoid them.

❌ Mistake #1: Not Getting the Right License

Many travelers assume their home license is enough, or that any IDP will work. The reality: Japan only accepts IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. If you're from Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, or Italy, you need a JAF translation instead.

Fix: Check your country on our driving license guide before booking your flight.

❌ Mistake #2: Picking Up from a City Center Location

Renting from Hakata or Tenjin puts you straight into heavy traffic, narrow one-way streets, and confusing signage — on your first day driving on the left side.

Fix: Choose a suburban pick-up point near the highway. Our Hakozaki Base is 10 minutes from Fukuoka Airport with immediate highway access — no city traffic.

❌ Mistake #3: Driving Too Much on Day One

It's tempting to race to Beppu or Aso straight away. But your first hour in a Japanese campervan should be calm — learning the vehicle, adjusting to left-side driving, and practicing at a parking lot.

Fix: We do a full vehicle walkthrough at pick-up. Plan a short drive (1–2 hours max) on Day 1.

❌ Mistake #4: Ignoring Toll Roads

Japan's expressways are excellent but can be expensive. Many first-timers don't realize you can save up to 30% with an ETC card, or that some scenic routes on free roads are actually more enjoyable.

Fix: Ask about our ETC card rental option. Also, mix expressways and free national routes — Route 57 through Aso is better than any highway!

❌ Mistake #5: Not Using Michi-no-Eki (道の駅)

Japan has over 1,200 "roadside stations" with free parking, clean restrooms, local food stalls, and sometimes even onsen. Many campervan travelers don't know about them.

Fix: Read our complete Michi-no-Eki guide. We provide a recommended overnight spot list at pick-up.

❌ Mistake #6: Overpacking

A campervan is NOT an RV mansion. Space is limited, especially in compact models. Bringing two full suitcases per person is a recipe for frustration.

Fix: Pack light. Use our packing checklist — we provide camping gear, so you only need personal items.

❌ Mistake #7: Camping Where You Shouldn't

Unlike some countries, Japan doesn't allow wild camping everywhere. Parking overnight at a random beach or shrine can get you a police visit.

Fix: Use designated campgrounds, RV parks, or Michi-no-Eki. Many are free or under ¥1,000/night.

❌ Mistake #8: Not Checking Gas Station Hours

In rural Kyushu, gas stations close by 7–8 PM and may be closed on Sundays. Running out of fuel on a mountain road is no fun.

Fix: Fill up whenever you see a station in rural areas. Keep your tank above 1/4 at all times.

❌ Mistake #9: Underestimating Driving Distances

Google Maps says "2 hours" but mountain roads, scenic detours, and onsen stops turn that into 4 hours easily. Don't over-plan your days.

Fix: Plan for 2–3 destinations per day maximum. Leave room for spontaneity — the best moments are unplanned!

❌ Mistake #10: Not Asking for Help

Japanese people are incredibly helpful, but many foreign travelers are shy about asking. Lost? Confused at a gas station? Just ask — most people will go out of their way to help, even with a language barrier.

Fix: Learn a few key phrases: "Sumimasen" (excuse me), "Koko wa doko desu ka?" (where is this?). And remember — our team offers 24/7 multilingual support!
