Japan expressways are efficient, safe, and well-maintained — but the toll system can be confusing for first-timers. Here is everything you need to know, from ETC cards to rest areas.
Toll System Basics
- Distance-based pricing — Fukuoka to Kumamoto (100km) costs about 2,500 yen
- ETC card = 30% discount — included with VanTripJapan rentals
- KEP (Kyushu Expressway Pass) — unlimited highway for 2-14 days, available to foreign tourists
ETC Tips
- Drive through the purple ETC-only lanes at 20km/h or less
- Make sure the ETC card is properly inserted — the machine will beep
- If the gate does not open, stay calm and press the help button
Rest Areas (SA/PA)
- Service Areas (SA) — full facilities: restaurants, shops, gas, clean restrooms
- Parking Areas (PA) — basic: restrooms, vending machines, parking
- Overnight parking — both SA and PA allow overnight stays (free)
