Kyushu is Japan's ultimate adventure island, packed with active volcanoes, dense cedar forests, coastal surf spots, and ancient hot springs. And there is no better way to explore it than a campervan road trip starting from Fukuoka.
Here is our recommended 7-Day Ultimate Kyushu Itinerary designed specifically for campervan travelers to experience the perfect blend of nature, culture, and relaxation.
The 7-Day Kyushu Route Overview
Fukuoka → Aso Volcano → Kurokawa Onsen → Takachiho Gorge → Beppu & Yufuin → Fukuoka
---Day 1: Fukuoka to Mount Aso (Kumamoto)
Pick up your campervan from our base in Fukuoka (just 10 minutes from the airport) and head south toward Kumamoto. Drive up the scenic Milk Road onto the rim of the world's largest volcanic caldera.
- Highlight: Daikanbo Lookout — a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Aso caldera.
- Campsite: Aso-Kuju National Park area. Wake up to wild horses grazing on the green plains.
Day 2: Exploring the Caldera & Kurokawa Onsen
Explore the active crater of Mount Aso (Nakadake) where you can peer into the bubbling blue acidic lake. In the afternoon, drive to Kurokawa Onsen, one of Japan's most preserved hot spring villages.
- Highlight: Buy a wooden "Onsen Pass" (Tegata) and hop between three different historic open-air baths surrounded by nature.
- Campsite: Kurokawa forest campsites. Enjoy a quiet night cooking fresh local Kumamoto beef.
Day 3: Takachiho Gorge (Miyazaki)
Drive southeast into the mystical mountains of Miyazaki to visit Takachiho Gorge, a sacred site where Japanese gods are said to have descended. The gorge features steep basalt columns formed by ancient lava flows.
- Highlight: Rent a rowing boat and paddle right next to the 17-meter Manai Falls.
- Overnight: Rest at Michi-no-Eki Takachiho (free parking with clean restrooms).
Day 4: Takachiho to Yufuin Onsen
Drive north through the winding mountain roads of Oita Prefecture to Yufuin, a charming art and onsen town nestled at the foot of Mount Yufu.
- Highlight: Walk around Kinrin Lake in the evening when the hot spring waters create a beautiful layer of steam on the surface.
- Campsite: Yufuin Nature Park campsite with views of the mountain peak.
Day 5: Beppu's Hells & Mud Baths
A short 30-minute drive takes you to Beppu, the hot spring capital of Japan. Visit the "Hells of Beppu" (Jigoku Meguri) — bubbling mud pools and boiling blue springs.
- Highlight: Try Jigoku-mushi (vegetables and eggs steam-cooked by natural volcanic heat) or take a traditional sand bath at the beach.
- Overnight: Stay at a coastal campsite near Beppu bay.
Day 6: Return to Fukuoka via Itoshima
Drive west back toward Fukuoka, making a detour to Itoshima Peninsula, Fukuoka's favorite coastal getaway famous for surf spots, beachside cafes, and artisan workshops.
- Highlight: Watch the sunset over the Sakurai Futamigaura double husband-and-wife rocks.
- Campsite: Coastal camp spot in Itoshima.
Day 7: Hakata Ramen & Departure
A short 40-minute drive back to our Fukuoka Hakozaki base. Drop off the van, grab a legendary bowl of Hakata tonkotsu ramen in Tenjin, and take a 10-minute subway ride to the airport for your flight home.
