Sakurajima is one of Japan most active volcanoes and the highlight of any Kagoshima road trip. Connected to the mainland by a peninsula, you can drive around this smoking giant, soak in magma-heated onsen, and camp with views of eruptions against the night sky.
Getting There
From Fukuoka, drive south on the Kyushu Expressway — about 3.5 hours to Kagoshima (ETC card included with VanTripJapan rental). You can also take the 15-minute ferry from Kagoshima Port, which runs 24/7 and costs just 200 yen for passengers.
The Sakurajima Drive (36km circuit)
- Yunohira Observatory — closest viewpoint to the crater, just 3km from the summit
- Arimura Lava Observatory — walk on 1914 lava flows, dramatic black rock landscape
- Furusato Onsen — oceanfront hot spring with Sakurajima views, tattoo-friendly
- Sakurajima Dinosaur Park — perfect for families, giant dinosaur playground set against the volcano
Where to Camp

- Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park — free parking with foot baths (ashiyu)
- Hirakawa Campsite — affordable campground with ocean and volcano views
- Michi-no-Eki Tarumizu — 30 minutes south, onsen + free parking + local market
