Landing in Fukuoka in the evening, or flying out early in the morning? Check the rental hours before you book. Most car rental offices serving Fukuoka Airport close between 18:00 and 20:00 and open again at 8:00 or 9:00, and their reservation lines tend to keep similar hours. At the major chains we checked, the 24-hour phone lines are for accidents and breakdowns, not for collecting a car or changing your return time.
At VAN TRIP JAPAN you can collect your campervan at any hour by self check-in at our Hakozaki base; returns outside 9:00-17:00 need prior arrangement.
Opening hours near Fukuoka Airport
What we found in October 2026 on the official pages of the major chains serving the airport and of Fukuoka's campervan rentals:
| Service | Typical hours | After hours |
|---|---|---|
| Major chains, domestic-terminal offices | Mostly 8:00-20:00; at least one closes at 19:00 | Accident and roadside lines (24-hour options below) |
| Major chains, international-terminal counters | 9:00-18:00 to 8:00-20:00, depending on the company | Accident and roadside lines |
| Reservation lines (bookings and changes) | Often the offices' hours, such as 8:00-20:00 | Unstaffed at night in the examples we checked |
| Campervan rentals in Fukuoka | Usually 8:00 or 9:00 to 18:00 | At least one discusses early or late handovers case by case |
A booking platform listing about 30 offices in the airport area agrees: every one closes between 18:00 and 21:00. The 24-hour exceptions are unattended or membership services, covered below.
The airport has rental counters only in the international terminal; from the domestic terminal you walk or ride a shuttle to a nearby office.
A 2026 directory lists seven campervan rentals in Fukuoka Prefecture, and all give hours ending at 18:00.
Why the hours clash with Fukuoka's flights
Fukuoka Airport is formally a 24-hour airport, but takeoffs and landings are limited in principle to 7:00-22:00. In the timetables for 25 October to 30 November 2026:
- The latest scheduled domestic arrivals land at 21:55 from Tokyo Haneda, with several more between 21:30 and 21:40.
- The latest international arrival is due at 20:05, after the counters we checked have closed.
- Several overnight flights from Southeast Asia land between about 7:05 and 8:55, around or before opening time.
- The first domestic departures leave at 7:00, and the earliest international ones at about 8:30-8:55.
Delays make it worse: MLIT, Japan's transport ministry, reports that about 13% of flights on the major domestic airlines left more than 15 minutes late in April-June 2025, and nearly 20% in July-September.
What can go wrong
You land after the office closes
One office serving the airport doesn't take bookings for flights landing at 20:00, and asks you to choose a flight that gets you there by 20:00. Another, according to a booking site listing, charges a night fee for handovers from 20:00 to 21:00 and can't serve you that day after 21:00. Miss the window and you may have to collect the car the next morning, so ask before booking what happens if your flight is late.
You can still reach the city: the last subway toward Hakata and Tenjin leaves the airport at 00:35 Monday to Saturday (midnight on Sundays and holidays).
Your flight is delayed or diverted
A flight due at 19:30 doesn't need much of a delay to miss a 20:00 closing. Flights that miss the 22:00 limit generally may not land without prior approval, and some have been diverted to Kitakyushu Airport, which is open 24 hours. In June 2023 one from Tokyo landed there shortly after 23:00, and most of its 280 passengers were bused to Fukuoka, long after the rental offices had closed.
Your flight out leaves before the office opens
The first flights to Tokyo leave at 7:00, before most offices open. Some offices also want the car back 90 minutes, or even three hours, before your flight: for the 8:35 to Seoul, three hours means 5:35, well before an 8:00 opening. Either way, you return the car the day before and pay for a last night in town.
You're running late on the way back
A traffic jam is enough. To extend, you normally contact the office you rented from, and it can say no if someone else has booked the car after you. Some campervan rentals in Fukuoka charge a full extra day if the van comes back after 18:00; one first charges overtime by the half hour until 19:00. If the office has closed by then, the van may have to go back the next morning.
The rules on returning late
MLIT's model terms for rental car contracts, a template companies can adapt, say any change to the rental period needs the company's prior consent and the car is handed back with staff present. If a natural disaster or similar event stops you returning on time, you are not liable for the resulting losses, provided you contact the company immediately and follow its instructions. Check your own company's terms.
So if you realise at 21:00 that you'll be late, the people who can approve a later return may not be at work until morning.
One major chain charges for the extra time plus a penalty of double that amount if you go over without permission. Another bills extensions at its full base rate, even on campaign or travel-site deals.
Insurance is the bigger risk. Japan's National Consumer Affairs Center lists an unauthorised extension as a breach of the rental terms, in which case insurance or compensation may not apply (this varies by company).
The 24-hour options that do exist
Most need setting up well before you fly.
- Car sharing. One major chain's Fukuoka Airport office also hosts car sharing with 24-hour pick-up and return, a separate membership service.
- Unstaffed stations. Another chain lists an unmanned 24-hour station 3 minutes' walk from domestic arrivals, for partner-site bookings only, and offers app-only night pick-up and return at some stations. Licence approval is due at least an hour before pick-up; first-time approval can take up to 24 hours and isn't processed at night.
- After-hours key drops. One national chain offers app-booked unattended returns at about 100 branches, but you pay until the branch reopens, and it isn't available on days the branch is closed. Ask who is responsible for the car overnight.
- Sharing-style campervan platforms. At least one offers unmanned 24-hour start and return; its campers in Fukuoka Prefecture are based in Kitakyushu.
Roadside and accident lines are different: those that state their hours run around the clock, all year, and a temporary JAF card, where your rental company provides one (some charge a small fee), adds roadside help with interpretation across most of Japan. They handle accidents and breakdowns, not return times.
How we handle late arrivals and early flights
We're a small family-run campervan rental in Fukuoka; our Fukuoka campervan booking guide covers the basics.
Pick-up at any hour
You can pick up your van at our base in Hakozaki, about 10 minutes from Fukuoka Airport, at any hour: it's self check-in with a key lockbox. Before pick-up you complete an online procedure, uploading your licence and passport and agreeing to the rental terms, including our accident rule. We then send you the lockbox code on WhatsApp.
With the code, you can land at 21:55, or arrive at midnight, and collect the van. No counter, no queue. Finish the procedure before you fly, because replies can be slower during late-night hours in Japan.
Airport pick-up is possible only by prior arrangement; ask when you book. Our three van types are on the rental page.
Returns: 9:00-17:00, other times by arrangement
Returns are 9:00-17:00 at the base, using the key box, and our booking form only offers that window. Flying out early, or need to come back after 17:00? Tell us your flight time when you book. Other times are possible only by prior arrangement, so wait for our confirmation before booking flights that depend on it.
If we can't arrange an earlier return, the standard window applies. For a 7:00 flight, that means returning the van the day before.
At night on the road
Every rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance. You can message us on WhatsApp or LINE at any time, in English, French, German, Chinese or Hebrew, and in more than 100 other languages via translation tools. We're a small family business, so our replies may be slower during late-night hours in Japan. After any accident, even a scrape, call the police on 110 at the scene, then message us.
Checklist before you book
- Check your flight times against the office's hours, allowing for immigration and delays.
- Landing after about 19:00, or flying out before the office opens? Get the handover and return times confirmed in writing, including any night fee.
- Save the reservation line and the 24-hour accident line; they're not the same.
- Running late? Ask for the change while the office is still open, before your rental time ends.
- Sort out your licence paperwork early: drivers from some countries need an official Japanese translation, not an International Driving Permit. See our guide Can foreigners drive in Japan?
Landing late or flying out early? Send us your flight times on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what we can arrange, or check dates and request your van on our booking page.
Frequently asked questions
What time do car rental offices at Fukuoka Airport close?
Most car rental offices serving Fukuoka Airport close between 18:00 and 20:00 and open again at 8:00 or 9:00. Campervan rentals in Fukuoka usually close at 18:00.
Can I call my rental company at night to change my return time?
Usually not. At the major chains we checked, the 24-hour lines are for accidents and breakdowns, while reservation lines keep business hours such as 8:00-20:00. Changes to the rental period normally need the company's prior consent.
What happens if I return a rental car late in Japan without permission?
You can be charged for the extra time plus a penalty, and an unauthorised extension breaches the rental terms. Japan's National Consumer Affairs Center warns that insurance or compensation may then not apply (this varies by company).
My flight lands in Fukuoka at night. Can I still pick up a van from VAN TRIP JAPAN?
Yes. You can pick up at our Hakozaki base, about 10 minutes from Fukuoka Airport, at any hour by self check-in with a key lockbox. Complete the online procedure before you fly, and we'll send you the lockbox code on WhatsApp.
Can I return a VAN TRIP JAPAN van before an early-morning flight?
Only by prior arrangement. Standard returns are 9:00-17:00 at our base, so tell us your flight time when you book and wait for our confirmation. If we can't arrange it, plan to return the van the day before.
