Iconic Spots

Sakurai Futamigaura (桜井二見ヶ浦)

Itoshima's most photographed location — two sacred rocks (meoto-iwa, married couple rocks) connected by a shimenawa rope in the ocean, with a white torii gate standing in the waves. At sunset during summer months, the sun sets directly between the two rocks, creating one of Kyushu's most spectacular natural frames. This is a Shinto sacred site belonging to Sakurai Shrine.

Access: Free parking along the coastal road. Best visited at sunset. The torii gate is most photogenic at high tide when waves crash around it.

Keya no Oto (芥屋の大門)

Japan's largest basalt sea cave — a 64-meter-high, 90-meter-deep cavern carved by waves into hexagonal basalt columns. You can view it from the cliff above (free, short hike) or take a sightseeing boat inside the cave during calm weather (approx. 800 yen, April-November). The hexagonal rock formations are similar to Ireland's Giant's Causeway.

Hakusan Torii Gate

A vermilion torii gate standing in the sea near Hakusan shrine — smaller and less crowded than Sakurai Futamigaura but equally photogenic, especially at sunset.

Best Cafes

Itoshima Oyster Season (October-March)

Itoshima's winter highlight is the kaki-goya (oyster huts) — rustic roadside shacks where you grill fresh oysters over charcoal at your table. About 10-15 huts line the coast between Fukae and Fukoishi beach, each offering baskets of fresh oysters for approximately 1,000-1,500 yen per kg. Some huts offer all-you-can-eat for about 2,500-3,500 yen per person (60-90 minutes).

Pro tip: Weekdays have shorter waits. Bring your own drinks (most huts allow BYO). Wear clothes you don't mind getting smoky.
