Japan's expressway tolls are distance-based and operated by NEXCO. An ETC card — included with every VanTripJapan rental — lets you pass through toll gates automatically and receive discounts of up to 30%. Here is everything you need to know about driving on Japanese toll roads.
Quick Facts
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Toll system | Distance-based (charged at exit) |
| Payment methods | ETC card (automatic), cash, credit card at manned gates |
| Speed limit | 80-100 km/h on expressways |
| ETC discounts | Up to 30% (weekends, nights, off-peak) |
| ETC card with VanTripJapan | Included free with every rental |
How the Toll System Works
- Enter the expressway: Drive through the ETC lane (marked with purple signs). The barrier opens automatically as your ETC card is read
- Drive: Follow speed limits (80-100 km/h). Stay in the left lane except when overtaking
- Exit the expressway: Drive through the ETC lane. The toll is calculated automatically based on your entry and exit points, and charged to the ETC card
- Receipt: The toll amount flashes on a display as you exit. You can check all charges later at any service area's ETC history machine
Without ETC: Use the "一般" (ippan/general) lane. Take a paper ticket at entry, and pay cash or credit card at the manned exit booth. No discounts apply.
ETC Discount Schedule
| Discount Type | Time/Condition | Discount Rate | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight (深夜割引) | 0:00-4:00 AM | 30% off | All sections |
| Weekend/Holiday (休日割引) | All day Sat/Sun/holidays | 30% off | Rural sections only |
| Off-peak varies by area | Varies | Up to 30% off | Selected sections |
Pro tip: If driving long distances, departing late evening and driving through midnight can save significant toll money. For example, Fukuoka to Kagoshima at midnight costs approximately 5,250 yen instead of 7,500 yen.
Typical Toll Costs in Kyushu

| Fukuoka → Beppu | ~130 km | 3,500 yen | ~2,450 yen |
| Fukuoka → Nagasaki | ~150 km | 3,800 yen | ~2,660 yen |
| Fukuoka → Kagoshima | ~280 km | 7,500 yen | ~5,250 yen |
| Beppu → Kumamoto (via Aso) | ~120 km | 2,800 yen | ~1,960 yen |
Free Alternative Routes (Toll-Free)
Japan's national routes (国道 kokudo) are completely free and well-maintained. They are slower than expressways but pass through towns, villages, and scenic areas that expressways bypass:
- Route 3 (国道3号): Fukuoka → Kumamoto → Kagoshima along the west coast. The main north-south artery
- Route 10 (国道10号): Fukuoka → Kitakyushu → Beppu → Miyazaki down the east coast
- Route 57 (国道57号): Kumamoto → Aso → Oita. The main cross-Kyushu route through the mountains
- Route 202 (国道202号): Fukuoka → Itoshima → Karatsu along the northwest coast
Our recommendation: Use expressways for long transits (Fukuoka to Kagoshima), and free routes for scenic exploration (coastal drives, mountain passes).
Service Areas & Parking Areas
Japanese expressways have two types of rest stops:
- SA (Service Area): Large facilities with restaurants, shops, gas stations, and sometimes hot springs. Spaced every 50-80 km
- PA (Parking Area): Smaller facilities with restrooms and vending machines. Spaced every 15-25 km
Both are free to use, open 24 hours, and popular for overnight campervan parking. Read our complete guide to SA/PA rest areas.
Expressway Driving Tips
- Speed limit: 80-100 km/h depending on the section. Speed cameras are common
- Lane discipline: Drive in the left lane. The right lane is for overtaking only
- Tunnel etiquette: Turn on headlights in tunnels (legally required). Kyushu has many tunnels, especially on the Oita-Kumamoto routes
- Fog and rain: Mountain expressways (especially near Aso) can have sudden fog. Reduce speed and use fog lights
- ETC lane speed: Slow down to 20 km/h when passing through ETC gates. The barrier opens, but don't race through
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I accidentally enter a general lane instead of ETC?
Don't worry — press the intercom button at the gate. The attendant will process your ETC card manually. It happens regularly and staff are used to helping foreign drivers.
Is the Kyushu Expressway Pass worth it?
The Kyushu Expressway Pass (KEP) offers unlimited expressway use for 2-4 days (approx. 3,500-5,000 yen/day). It is worth it only for short trips with heavy expressway driving. For typical 5-7 day campervan trips mixing expressway and free routes, the standard ETC discounts are usually cheaper.
