Kurokawa Onsen is Kyushu's most charming hot spring village — a hidden mountain hamlet with 30 ryokan, lantern-lit stone paths, and the famous Nyuto Tegata pass (¥1,500) that lets you hop between three different outdoor baths. It is consistently voted one of Japan's most atmospheric onsen destinations.

⚡ Quick Facts

The Nyuto Tegata Experience

The Nyuto Tegata (入湯手形) is Kurokawa's signature experience. This wooden pass costs ¥1,500 for adults and ¥700 for children, and includes entry to three different rotenburo (outdoor baths) at participating ryokan. Each ryokan has a completely different bathing environment — riverside, forest, cave, cliffside — so you get three unique experiences for the price of one.

How it works:

  1. Buy the Tegata at the visitor center or any participating ryokan
  2. Choose three ryokan from the participating list (about 24 options)
  3. Present your Tegata at each ryokan reception — they stamp it
  4. Enjoy the rotenburo bath
  5. The pass is valid for 6 months, so you can return
  6. Unused stamps can sometimes be exchanged for drinks or souvenirs

🗣 Karen's Local Tip: "Arrive at Kurokawa around 3-4pm. Start with Yamabiko Ryokan (the most popular — go early to avoid crowds), then walk to Shinmeikan for the cave bath, and finish at Kurokawa-so as the lanterns are being lit. The walk between ryokan along the river is magical in the evening light. Stop at a cafe on the main path for coffee and sweet potato dessert between baths."
