Daikanbo is the single best viewpoint in Kyushu — a 360-degree panorama of all five Aso peaks from the northern caldera rim where, at sunrise, the peaks resemble a sleeping Buddha. Combined with the Kusasenri grasslands and three iconic scenic drives, Mount Aso offers the most spectacular campervan driving in Japan.

Daikanbo (大観峰) — Kyushu's #1 Viewpoint

Daikanbo sits on the northern rim of the Aso caldera at 936 meters elevation. From the parking area, a 10-minute walk along a paved path leads to the observation platform. The view is staggering: all five Aso peaks (Takadake, Nakadake, Nekodake, Kishimadake, Eboshidake) spread across the caldera floor, surrounded by a ring of outer caldera walls.

The Sleeping Buddha (涅槃像 Nehanzo): At dawn, when mist fills the caldera, the five peaks look like a giant Buddha lying on its back — the head, chest, and folded hands clearly visible. This illusion is one of Japan's most famous natural phenomena and the reason photographers arrive before sunrise.

Access: Free parking (large lot suitable for campervans). Restrooms available. A small souvenir shop opens in the morning. No entry fee.

Kusasenri Grasslands (草千里ヶ浜)

Kusasenri is a vast volcanic grassland formed inside an ancient crater at the base of Mount Aso's central cone. The landscape is unlike anything else in Japan — wide-open meadows with a shallow seasonal lake, horses grazing freely, and the smoking Nakadake crater in the background.

Parking: Large free parking area perfect for campervans. Restrooms and a small restaurant/café on-site.

Komezuka (米塚) — The Perfect Mini Volcano

Visible from the main road between Aso town and Kusasenri, Komezuka is a perfectly symmetrical 80-meter-high mini volcano with a dimple at its summit. According to local legend, the god Takeiwatatsu scooped rice from the top to feed starving people, creating the characteristic depression. The vivid green cone against the backdrop of the larger Aso peaks is one of Kyushu's most photographed landscapes. You cannot climb Komezuka, but roadside pullouts offer excellent views.

Three Iconic Scenic Drives

1. Yamanami Highway (やまなみハイウェイ)

Stretching 50 km from Aso to Yufuin, the Yamanami Highway is consistently rated one of Japan's top scenic driving roads. The route climbs through highland pastures, passes the Kuju mountain range, and descends into the Yufuin valley. The entire drive takes about 1.5-2 hours with stops. Key viewpoints along the way include Makinoto Pass and the Kuju Flower Park.

This road connects directly to Beppu and Yufuin, making it the natural link between Aso and the onsen region.

2. Milk Road (ミルクロード)

A ridgeline road running along the outer caldera wall north of Aso. The road offers dramatic views into the caldera from above, with open grasslands and dairy farms on either side (hence the name). The Milk Road connects to Daikanbo and is particularly beautiful in the early morning when mist fills the caldera below.

3. Aso Panorama Line

The main access road from Aso town up to the Kusasenri grasslands and crater area. This winding mountain road passes through forests, grasslands, and volcanic terrain. Well-paved and suitable for all vehicles, including campervans.
