Kyushu's autumn colours start in the Kuju and Aso highlands in late October and work their way down to Takachiho Gorge and Kikuchi Valley by mid to late November, with the lowland shrines and gardens last, into early December. That is roughly the same season as Kyoto. A campervan lets you follow the colour down the mountains instead of betting on one hotel for one weekend.
Booking note, late October 2026: most of our dates until about 20 November are already booked, though a few gaps remain. As of late October 2026, the last week of November and most of December are still open, and that is when the maples in Fukuoka city usually turn. Check prices for 24 to 29 November 2026 or for 1 to 6 December 2026, then read the lowland section below. December counts as winter driving for us.
Best Fall Foliage Spots in Kyushu
- Takachiho Gorge: Fiery maples reflected in the gorge water (mid to late November)
- Kikuchi Valley, Kumamoto: Valley of cascading waterfalls and red maples (mid to late November). Entry is 500 yen from high-school age, with staff on site from 1 April to 30 November. Check the official site before you go, because some local roads had detours after the July 2026 earthquake.
- Yufuin: Kinrin Lake surrounded by golden ginkgo and red maple (November)
- Yamanami Highway: Mountain road between Aso and Beppu, a tunnel of color (early November; not a winter road for our vans)
- Mifuneyama Rakuen, Saga: a 500,000 square meter garden in Takeo; its 2026 autumn leaves festival runs from 6 November to 6 December, with the garden lit until 22:00
- Dazaifu Tenmangu: Historic shrine near Fukuoka, best known for its 6,000 plum trees; for autumn colour, walk next door to the moss garden of Komyozen-ji (late November to early December)
- Kirishima: Volcanic landscape with fiery autumn colors at high elevation (early November)
When the Colours Peak

These are the usual windows, not a forecast for 2026. A warm autumn pushes them later and an early cold spell brings them forward.
For the lowlands there is an official yardstick. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) records the first day most leaves on its sample maple tree in each city have turned red, and in Fukuoka the 1991 to 2020 average is 1 December. In 2025 the Fukuoka tree turned on exactly that day. JMA's averages put maple colour across northern Kyushu around 30 November and in southern Kyushu in early to mid December.
For the mountain spots, private weather sites such as tenki.jp and Weathernews publish colour reports for many named places from October. Check the report for your stop the night before you drive.
Late November and Early December: Lowland Colour near Fukuoka
By the time the gorges are bare, the colour has moved down to the towns and gardens. Two easy stops from Fukuoka:
- Dazaifu: the moss garden of Komyozen-ji, next to Dazaifu Tenmangu, usually turns from late November into early December.
- Mifuneyama Rakuen, Takeo: the 2026 autumn leaves festival runs from 6 November to 6 December. Day entry (8:00 to 17:30) or evening entry (17:30 to 22:00) costs 600 yen for adults, and a ticket for both costs 900 yen. Michi-no-Eki Yamauchi is in the same city.
From December we treat the trip as a winter trip. From December to February we do not recommend driving our vans on the mountain roads around Aso and Kuju, including the Yamanami Highway, or up to Kurokawa Onsen. Stay on lowland and coastal routes: Takeo and the porcelain town of Arita in Saga (see our Ureshino teacup onsen stop), the Itoshima coast west of Fukuoka, or the drive on to Nagasaki.
The two Bongo vans have no heater. From December to February we lend a free electric blanket, plus sleeping bags and blankets, on request. The Pocket Loft has a cabin heater.
Where to Sleep Near the Autumn Spots
If you would rather not book rooms around the gorges and highlands, these roadside stations sit close to the colour, and none of them explicitly bans sleeping in the car, according to VanTripJapan's 2026 survey of all 145 Michi-no-Eki in Kyushu.
They are for the October and November trip into the hills. In December, sleep at Michi-no-Eki Yamauchi in Takeo or elsewhere on the lowland routes above.
- Takachiho Gorge: Michi-no-Eki Takachiho is about 0.7 km from the gorge, close enough to be first at the viewpoints in the morning.
- Kirishima: Michi-no-Eki Kirishima is about 2 km from Kirishima Jingu at around 670 m, so expect cold nights.
- Yufuin: Michi-no-Eki Yufuin is just outside town, which saves you the weekend fight for parking at Kinrin Lake.
- Kuju: Michi-no-Eki Nagayu Onsen is in the carbonated hot spring town of Nagayu.
- Aso: Michi-no-Eki Aso is next to JR Aso Station, with the Yume no Yu day-use bath a 2-minute walk away.
If you would rather sleep in a tent, Bogatsuru in the Kuju mountains is a free campsite in a highland wetland. No road reaches it; you walk in from Chojabaru in about two hours with everything on your back.
Onsen After a Cold Morning
Autumn is the best season for hot springs, because the mornings in the highlands are genuinely cold. Kurokawa Onsen sells the Nyuto Tegata pass for 1,500 yen. It gets you into three of the 25 outdoor baths at Kurokawa's inns, between 8:30 and 21:00, and it stays valid for six months, so you can save a bath for a later trip. One of the three stickers on the back of the pass can go on food or a souvenir instead. Bring your own towel. Kurokawa sits up in the hills, so go in October or November, not in winter.
Nagayu Onsen near Kuju is known for its carbonated springs, and at Aso the Yume no Yu bath is right by the station.
Suggested 5-Day Autumn Route
This route climbs into the highlands, so it is for late October and November. In late November the Aso highlands are usually past their best, so swap Day 3 for the lowland stops above. From December, use the lowland route instead.
- Day 1: Fukuoka to Dazaifu Tenmangu (the moss garden at Komyozen-ji next door colours from late November)
- Day 2: Drive to Yufuin via scenic mountain roads, enjoy lakeside autumn views
- Day 3: Yamanami Highway to Mount Aso (best from late October to early November)
- Day 4: Takachiho Gorge, the most photogenic autumn spot in Kyushu
- Day 5: Kikuchi Valley, return to Fukuoka via Kumamoto
Autumn Camping Tips
- Temperatures: in Fukuoka city, November averages a daily high of 18.2°C and a low of 10.6°C (JMA 1991 to 2020 normals), and the highlands are much colder at night. Every van comes with sleeping bags and bedding. The Bongo vans have no heater; the Pocket Loft has a cabin heater.
- Book popular campsites early. Autumn weekends fill up fast
- Drive the mountain roads in daylight. They are narrow and mostly unlit, and fog often sits in the valleys in the early morning
- Roads in Kumamoto Prefecture: roads there were affected by the earthquake on 28 July 2026. The Kyushu Expressway between Matsubase and Ebino was closed and reopened on 14 August 2026. About 1.5 km near Kawada Bridge, north of Yatsushiro IC, still runs two-way on one carriageway, and NEXCO West expects all four lanes back around the end of 2027.
