The official national rule (read this first)

Michi-no-Eki are government-designated rest stops with free 24-hour parking. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) position: resting and napping in your vehicle is accepted — using the parking lot as accommodation is not. In practice, a quiet one-night rest in your campervan is tolerated at most stations, while camping behavior (chairs, tables, awnings, BBQ, long stays) is not. Individual stations can and do post their own explicit bans — that is exactly what this database tracks.

Overnight etiquette (non-negotiable)

1. One night only — this is a rest stop, not a campsite
2. Engine off, no idling (many prefectures ban idling by ordinance)
3. Nothing outside the van: no chairs, tables, awnings or clotheslines
4. No BBQ, no open flames
5. Park at the far end, away from the shop entrance
6. Quiet after 21:00 — doors, voices, music
7. Take all trash with you
8. Buy something from the shop or restaurant — it keeps stations camper-friendly
