Takachiho Gorge is one of Kyushu's most spectacular natural wonders — a volcanic gorge with the 17-meter Manai Falls cascading into emerald pools, sacred mythology connections, and a boat ride that ranks among Japan's most unforgettable experiences. There is no train service here, making a campervan the ideal way to visit.

🗣 Karen's Local Tip: "Book your boat online exactly 2 weeks before your visit — slots fill up fast, especially for 9:00-10:00 AM times. Morning light creates the most beautiful green glow in the water. If you miss the online booking window, arrive at the ticket office before 7:30 AM for same-day tickets. Weekday mornings are the easiest. And bring waterproof protection for your phone — you WILL get splashed near the waterfall!"

Beyond the Boat: Walking Trail

The free 1km walking trail along the gorge rim is stunning in its own right — and accessible even if boats are closed. Viewpoints along the trail offer dramatic overhead views of the gorge, falls, and boats below. The trail has handrails and is paved, though some sections have steep stairs.

Amano Iwato Shrine — 15 Minutes Away

Takachiho is one of Japan's most important mythological sites. According to the Kojiki (Japan's oldest chronicle), the sun goddess Amaterasu hid in a cave here, plunging the world into darkness. That cave — Amano Yasukawara — is a short walk from Amano Iwato Shrine and is filled with stacked stones left by visitors making wishes.

Takachiho Shrine & Yokagura Dance

Takachiho Shrine (in the town center) features 800-year-old cedar trees and hosts the famous Yokagura performance:
