🗣 Karen's Local Tip: "The Buried Torii Gate is my favorite spot on Sakurajima. In 1914, this torii gate stood 3 meters tall at the entrance to a shrine. After the massive eruption buried the area in ash, only the top crossbar remains visible. The villagers decided to leave it as-is as a permanent reminder of the volcano's power. It gives you chills standing there. Also — the free foot onsen is the longest volcanic foot bath in Japan and perfectly positioned for watching the sunset over Kagoshima city."

Volcano Safety
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) monitors Sakurajima 24/7 and issues alert levels:
| Alert Level | What It Means | Tourist Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Normal | All areas open |
| Level 2 (typical) | Crater restricted | All tourist areas open, crater summit off-limits |
| Level 3 | Mountain restricted | Some upper areas may close; loop road and ferry open |
| Level 4-5 | Evacuation | Extremely rare — island may be evacuated |
At the typical Level 2, all tourist areas, the loop road, and the ferry operate normally. Small ash eruptions happen regularly but are directed upward and away from tourist zones.
