After helping hundreds of international travelers explore Kyushu by campervan, we have seen the same mistakes over and over. Avoid these 10 pitfalls and your trip will be smoother, cheaper, and more enjoyable from day one.
🚫 The 10 Mistakes at a Glance
- Not getting your driving credentials before traveling
- Over-planning your itinerary
- Not carrying enough cash
- Setting up camping gear outside at Michi-no-Eki
- Not booking popular attractions in advance
- Underestimating mountain driving times
- Not downloading offline maps
- Forgetting trash management
- Skipping the ETC card benefits
- Not trying onsen early in the trip
Mistake #1: Not Getting Your Driving Credentials
This is the most common and most devastating mistake. Without the correct driving document, you legally cannot drive in Japan.
| Your Country | What You Need | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|
| USA, UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, Singapore | International Driving Permit (IDP) | Local automobile association (AAA, NRMA, etc.) |
| Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Taiwan | JAF-certified translation | JDLTC — online |
Fix it: Get your IDP or JAF translation BEFORE you fly to Japan. Carry both your original license AND the permit/translation.
Mistake #2: Over-Planning Your Itinerary
First-timers try to visit 3-4 major attractions per day. This turns a relaxing road trip into a stressful race.
| Bad Plan | Good Plan |
|---|---|
| Beppu → Aso → Takachiho → Kumamoto in 1 day | Beppu → Aso in 1 day (with stops) |
| 6 hours of driving per day | 2-3 hours of driving per day |
| Arrive at destinations already tired | Arrive refreshed, enjoy the journey |
| No time for unexpected discoveries | Best memories come from spontaneous stops |
🗣 Karen's Tip: "The magic of Kyushu campervan travel is what you discover between destinations — a roadside onsen you did not plan, a Michi-no-Eki with incredible local mochi, a viewpoint with nobody else around. Plan your 2 main stops for the day, then leave everything else open. I promise the unplanned moments will become your favorite memories."
Mistake #3: Not Carrying Enough Cash
Japan is more cash-dependent than most Western countries, especially in rural Kyushu. These essential experiences are often cash-only:
- Public onsen hot springs (¥300-800)
- Municipal and free campgrounds
- Michi-no-Eki fresh produce markets
- Small local restaurants
- Highway rest area food stalls
- Rural parking meters
- Temple and shrine admission fees
Fix it: Carry ¥30,000-50,000 in cash. Withdraw from 7-Eleven ATMs (accept all international cards, English menu, available 24/7).
Mistake #4: Setting Up Camping Gear at Michi-no-Eki
This is the most important etiquette rule in Japanese campervan culture. Michi-no-Eki are rest areas, not campsites.
| ✓ OK at Michi-no-Eki | ✗ NOT OK at Michi-no-Eki |
|---|---|
| Sleep in your van | Set up tables and chairs outside |
| Cook inside your van | BBQ or cook outside |
| Use restrooms | Hang laundry |
| Buy from the shop/restaurant | Throw away your van trash in their bins |
| Stay one night | Stay multiple nights in the same spot |
Mistake #5: Not Booking Popular Spots in Advance
- Takachiho boat ride: Book online 2 weeks ahead — sells out every weekend
- Popular campgrounds (Golden Week, Obon): Book via nap-camp.com or call ahead
- Yakushima ferry: Vehicle reservations recommended, especially in summer
- Kurokawa Onsen: Day-use bath times have limited capacity
Mistake #6: Underestimating Mountain Driving Times
GPS often shows the fastest route, but mountain roads are winding with lower speed limits. Real driving times in Kyushu:
| Route | GPS Says | Actual Time | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aso → Takachiho | 1 hour | 1.5-2 hours | Mountain switchbacks, slower pace |
| Beppu → Kurokawa | 1.5 hours | 2-2.5 hours | Yamanami Highway curves + viewpoint stops |
| Kumamoto → Aso crater | 45 min | 1-1.5 hours | Elevation climb, tourist traffic |
| Kagoshima → Kirishima | 1 hour | 1.5 hours | Mountain approach road |
Fix it: Add 30-50% to GPS estimated times for mountain routes. And enjoy the drive — the scenic mountain roads ARE the experience.
Mistake #7: Not Downloading Offline Maps
Phone signal in Kyushu is generally good but weakens in gorges, mountains, and tunnels. Download these before leaving Fukuoka:
- Google Maps offline area covering all of Kyushu
- Maps.me as a backup (includes hiking trails)
- VanTripJapan also provides a standalone English GPS unit
Mistake #8: Forgetting Trash Management
Japan has very few public trash cans. Carry a bag and sort your waste:
- Burnable (可燃): Food waste, paper, wood
- Non-burnable (不燃): Plastic, metal, glass
- PET bottles: Separate, caps removed — recycle at konbini
- Disposal: Convenience stores (if you buy something), campground bins, recycling stations
Mistake #9: Not Using the ETC Card Benefits
VanTripJapan includes an ETC highway toll card with every rental. Do not waste this benefit:
- 30% discount on weekends and holidays (automatic)
- Up to 50% off during late-night hours (midnight-4am)
- No stopping at toll gates — drive straight through
- No fumbling with cash or tickets at tollbooths
Mistake #10: Not Trying Onsen Early
Many first-timers are nervous about onsen (public bathing) and put it off until the end of their trip. Then they say: "I wish I had done this on Day 1!" Start with a smaller, quieter onsen to get comfortable. See our shower and onsen guide.
