The biggest mistake first-time campervan travelers make in Japan is not preparing their driving license before arriving. Here are 10 common mistakes and how to avoid every one of them.

Mistake 1: Not Getting Your License Ready Before Arrival

You need either an IDP or JAF translation BEFORE you arrive. Some travelers assume they can sort it out in Japan — you cannot get an IDP in Japan. Apply via JDLTC if you need a JAF translation.

Mistake 2: Trying to Drive Too Far Each Day

Japan is smaller than you think, but mountain roads are slower. Limit drives to 1-2 hours per day and enjoy stops along the way.

Mistake 3: Not Carrying Cash

Many campgrounds, onsen, and rural parking lots are cash-only. Always carry at least 10,000-20,000 yen in cash.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Michi-no-Eki Etiquette

Keep quiet after 10pm, do not set up chairs/tables outside, and leave the parking spot clean.

Mistake 5: Overpacking

VanTripJapan provides bedding, cooking gear, and camping equipment. You only need clothes and personal items.

Mistake 6: Not Downloading Offline Maps

Cell signal is weak in mountain areas. Download Google Maps offline for Kyushu before you go.

Mistake 7: Skipping the ETC Card

Expressway tolls in Japan are expensive. The ETC card (included with VanTripJapan) gives automatic discounts.

Mistake 8: Driving After Drinking

Japan has zero tolerance. Even one beer means you cannot drive. Designate a driver or enjoy onsen instead of sake.

Mistake 9: Parking in No-Parking Zones

Never park on streets overnight. Always use designated parking areas: Michi-no-Eki, campgrounds, or SA/PA rest areas.

Mistake 10: Not Trying Local Food

Do not just eat konbini food! Try Hakata ramen in Fukuoka, Bungo-gyu beef in Oita, and local Michi-no-Eki restaurants.
