Can foreigners drive in Japan? Your licence, explained
This is the single most important thing to sort out before you fly. Which document you need depends on your country:
- USA, UK, Australia, Canada and most countries: you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried with your home licence.
- France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco, Taiwan: an IDP is NOT valid in Japan. You instead need an official Japanese translation of your licence. This is easy to arrange online before you arrive via our partner JDLTC (drive-japan-license.com). (Taiwanese drivers can also obtain the translation locally.)

Yes. The Toyota Probox is ideal for couples: it sleeps two in a roof tent and still fits 2 to 3 large suitcases, which is perfect if you plan to shop in Fukuoka. For sleeping inside, choose the Mazda Bongo. If more people are coming, the Probox seats 5 and the Bongo 3, though each van sleeps 2.
Can I sleep in the campervan overnight in Japan?
Yes. Japan has over 1,200 michi-no-eki roadside stations, and many tolerate a quiet night's rest in your vehicle. Camping is not allowed, so no tents or cooking outside the van. Some stations ban overnight stays, so check the station-by-station rules for Kyushu first. There are also campgrounds and RV parks across Kyushu.
