Free Scenic Alternatives
Kyushu's national routes (kokudo) are toll-free, well-maintained, and offer experiences that expressways cannot:
- National Route 3: Fukuoka → Kumamoto → Kagoshima along the west coast. Passes through seaside towns and agricultural areas
- National Route 10: Fukuoka → Kitakyushu → Beppu → Miyazaki down the east coast. Stunning coastal scenery
- Yamanami Highway: Beppu/Yufuin → Aso through highland pastures. One of Japan's top 10 scenic roads. See our Aso guide
- Nichinan Coast Route: Miyazaki → Aoshima → Cape Toi along the Pacific. Tropical coastline. See our Miyazaki guide
Best Strategy: Mix Expressway and Free Routes
The smartest approach for a campervan trip is to use expressways for long transits and free routes for scenic exploration:
- Day 1: Expressway from Fukuoka to Beppu (save time for afternoon onsen)
- Days 2-5: Free scenic routes around Aso, Takachiho, Miyazaki coast
- Day 6: Expressway back from Kagoshima to Fukuoka (long distance, save time)
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a rest area guide app?
Yes. The NEXCO official app "iHighway Kyushu" shows real-time traffic, rest area locations, and facilities. Google Maps also shows SA/PA locations. See our best apps guide for more recommendations.
What if I miss my exit?
Continue to the next exit — there is no U-turn on expressways. Exits are spaced every 10-30 km in Kyushu. The extra toll for the additional distance is minimal (a few hundred yen).
